Course Map

The flat and fast LaPorte 5K course gives participants a taste of everything!  Starting on "A" Street, the course travels through the residential streets of the Fairfield neighborhood, along the walking paths of Kesling Park, and finishes with triumph as participants cross the finish line on the track of the Slicer Track and Field Complex.

We utilize a wave start at our 5K events to divide runners into groups that start a few minutes apart. Runners will be directed to start lining up for the wave start at 9:30AM so that the 5K can begin promptly at 10AM. Coaches will direct teams to their appropriate wave location.  

The 5K participants will pass water stops on mile 1 and on mile 2. Cheer Teams will also be placed along the course to cheer on the girls and 5K participants.

Packet Pick-Up

Current GOTR Program Participants are already registered for the 5K and will receive their materials (bibs, pins, shirts) from their coaches on 5K day.

Teams will have a designated area at the event location. Coaches will pick up their team 5K materials and distribute them during the pre-run celebration on site.

For all other 5K participants (Running Buddies, coaches, family members and community participants), packet pick-up information is as follows:

Early Packet Pick-up: Thursday, November 9 from 3PM - 6PM at GOTR Office (2906 Highway Ave in Highland)

Day-of 5K: Registration Tent from 8AM-9:30AM 

5K day registration will be available, however, shirt and/or sizes are not guaranteed.


Can anyone run in the 5K?

Everyone is welcome to attend our 5K. Registration is required in order to run in the event. Our program participants are registered for the 5K as part of their program registration, so current GOTR Girls do not need to register for the 5K.

Inclement Weather Policy

Girls on the Run 5K Events take place rain or shine. In case of severe weather, an announcement will be made for attendees to move to shelter in Kesling Middle School. If dangerous weather arises while runners are on the course, please proceed to the nearest indoor space. No refunds will be issued in the case of severe weather.

Day of Registration

There will be day of registration open from 8:00am to 9:30am. Early registration is highly recommended as day of registrants are not guaranteed a t-shirt. T-shirts for day of registrants are available on a first-come, first-served basis.


Only service dogs are permitted to be at GOTR 5K events per titles II and III of the ADA. Other pets are not allowed on the course or at the event, so please leave them at home on 5K day.

Are strollers allowed?

While strollers are allowed, we ask that for the safety of the child that strollers start at the back or to the right side of the street for 5K start.


GOTR Girls can begin arriving at 8:00am for pre-run activities. Upon their arrival make sure that they understand the first thing they are to do is to check-in with their team. There will be a DJ, face painting, and color hairspray station. By 9:30am all girls should have arrived and are to report to their team area to prepare for 5K start. Due to the amount of runners, girls will be assigned to a wave by team.

5K Wave Start

At 9:30am all girls should report back to their team area. At 9:35am we will begin line-up for the wave start. Please line your team up on the side of your area closest the race start. From there we will dismiss the teams by row/wave to go to the starting line. There will be Wave Marshals leading each group. You will walk with your wave to line up in the parking lot for the race to start at 10am. Each wave will be dismissed in 5 minute increments.

What GOTR Girls should wear

All current Girls on the Run and Heart & Sole participants should wear their program shirts the day of the race. The majority of the event takes place outside, so be prepared for our unpredictable Northwest Indiana weather. Consider wearing layers with program shirt over long sleeve(s) when appropriate.

Clean Up

Please clean up your space after the run. There will be garbage cans throughout the area. We will be providing a garbage bag to each team. Please use it! We would like to leave this area in better shape than when we arrive.


Water will be available at the start. Two water stations will be available on the course at Mile 1 and Mile 2. Runners are also encouraged to bring water bottles along on the course. Additional water and snacks will be available at the finish line.


Finishing times vary of course, but our fastest runners will complete the run in about 25 minutes. Most runners will fall between 30-45 minutes We will be sweeping the course at one hour from the starting time to ensure all runners have returned to the starting area.


Parking is available at the Kesling Middle School parking lot.

Coach Arrival Time

Coaches are to arrive between 7:00am and 7:30am for set up. Please head over to the Volunteer/Team Check-In Tent to drop off your coach bag, unused/reusable program supplies, and all copies of the curriculum, and to pick up your team packet if you have not already received it at Early Packet Pick Up. Your team will have a designated area to set up. This is done alphabetically and by rows. Please set up only in your designated areas.

Coach Unloading Zone

There will be an unloading zone for all teams. Once your vehicle has been unloaded please move it to a designated parking area. You may use tents/canopies/etc.

Volunteer Registration

This event would not be possible without the help of amazing volunteers who believe in our mission and show up to support our girls. Over 100 volunteers are needed to put on our best 5K yet! Whatever your special skills and talents, we have a role for everyone.

Group Opportunities

Do you work for an organization or business that is interested in giving back to the community? Come volunteer as a group at our 5K event! Please email Volunteer Coordinator Jacqueline Weber at, and she will follow up with you directly to work out the details!

5K Shirt Sorting

Help us sort and fold 5K shirts in preparation for our events. Shirt sorting will take place at the GOTR Office (2906 Highway Ave in Highland) on Thursday, November 9 from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Lunch provided.

Early Packet Pickup

We encourage coaches and pre-registered runners to pick up their 5K packets in advance of event day. Volunteer to assist with packet pickup on Thursday, November 9 at the GOTR Office (2906 Highway Ave in Highland). Time commitment 3:00-6:00 PM. Best suited for those age 16 and over.

GOTR Muscles

Calling all strong men and women! We need help carrying supplies, setting up and taking down tents before and after our Highland 5K. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. First shift is on Friday, November 10 at the GOTR Office (2906 Highway Ave in Highland) from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM to help load the truck. Second shift on Friday, November 10 is at Kesling Middle School from 4:00-7:00 PM to begin setting up for 5K day. We will also have two 5K day shifts on Saturday, November 11 from 6:00-8:00 AM and 10:00 AM-12:00 PM.


Volunteers will help with 5K registration, assisting pre-registered runners and event day runners. Time commitment is 7:30-10:00 AM. This volunteer opportunity is best suited for individuals over 18 years of age.

Happy Hair and Face Painting

Help GOTR girls get 5K-ready! Girls get color hairspray at the Happy Hair station and the GOTR logo at face painting station (no art experience needed, stencils are used). Time commitment 7:30-10:00 AM. Best suited for those age 10 and over.

Wave Start

We have hundreds of runners at each of our 5K events! We utilize a wave start at our events to divide runners into groups that start a few minutes apart. Volunteers help direct and organize various waves. Time commitment 9:30-10:30 AM. Best suited for those age 16 and over.

Course Cheerleaders

Cheer on our runners as the complete the course! Time commitment 9:00-11:30 AM. Best suited for those age 16 and over.

First Aid

Medical experience required. Time commitment 8:00-11:30 AM.

Lost and Found

Time commitment 8:00-11:30 AM. Best suited for those age 16 and over.

Merchandise Tent

Help sell GOTR gear. Experience with merchandise sales is preferred. Experience with Square payment system is extremely helpful. Time commitment 7:00-11:30 AM. Best suited for those age 18 and over.

Parking Attendants

Direct traffic in our parking lots. Time commitment 7:00-10:00 AM. Best suited for those age 18 and over.

Post-Run Snacks

Help our GOTR girls recharge after their run by handing out snacks and water. Time commitment 10:00-11:30 AM. Best suited for those age 10 and over.

Volunteer and Coach Check-In

Help direct our volunteers to their locations and ensure coaches have everything they need for 5K day. Time commitment 7:00-10:00 AM. Best suited for those age 16 and over.

Water Stop

Hydration is key for our runners! Hand out water on the course. Time commitment 9:00-11:30 AM. Best suited for those age 10 and over.
